b words and other stories.

Hello, and welcome to my blog! My name is Louise, and those who know me will tell you that I absolutely love to talk about all of the things brain and body related [yes, they are the b words I am referring to!]. There are other b words that I am interested in, such as banana bread, bluey and black-friday-sales, but I'm going to stick with biology! Human beings fascinate me, they always have. You could say that I am a little bit nerd but I like to consider myself to be a little bit comedienne as well. But as I have been told many times before - it's not a joke if I'm the only one laughing, so I'll let you be the judge of that!

What I definitely am is a student of life. Now, that sounds somewhat fluffy, poetic and perhaps ridiculous, but what I mean by that is so much of what I have learned in my life so far has not come from the classroom or a textbook. It comes from lived experiences, and the privilege of being educated by those who know.

I am a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse, based in the beautiful regional town of Ballarat in Victoria, Australia. It was my chosen career, and here I am. Years of working across various acute and community settings within Australia, learning from many incredible people, collecting various pieces of paper along the way, has landed me in a place of realising ... I never want to stop learning! But, collecting knowledge and not sharing it with others is so selfish, and I'm committed to paying it forward, and I'm starting right here.

There is a lot that I could tell you about me, but one thing you should know is that I used to be what my father would call a 'flibbertigibbet'. Buzzing about and giving everything a go, never settling. I was always searching for my 'niche'. Because everyone has a niche, right? The problem was, I felt so passionate about absolutely everything. You know, you don't become a nurse if you don't care, or don't like humans, or don't want to help. And, I honestly wanted to do it all. Eventually, it came to me though, caught me unaware, and I realised that there were a few things that really, truly, mattered to me more than anything. These special interest areas are what I've gone on to pursue over the years, with unfaltering commitment and energy to keep going and provide a much-needed mental health service to my local community (and beyond!). Like the Buzz Lightyear of mental health!

No one right now as I type this: Please Louise, do tell! What is it?!

Louise: Ok, I can't wait to tell you! Here it is.

  1. Early intervention and in particular, working with the younger folk who are experiencing emerging mental health difficulties.

  2. The limbo land of brain and body. The complex illnesses that impact brain and body, such as eating disorders, body image disturbances, chronic pain and conditions.

Why? So many reasons that you will come to learn about, and I truly hope that they might end up mattering a whole lot to you too. Or, perhaps these things are already close to your heart, and if so, I really do see you.

I cannot wait to get started sharing with you and I would also love to hear your thoughts along the way. Always feel free to drop me a line, ask me a question, pull me up on things, educate me, tell me what you like, and perhaps even suggest some topics that you might like me to open up for discussion.

The brain and body blog of ballarat (and other stories), is officially full of b words and ready for blast-off.
